The Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (CEIT) at Middle East Technical University traces its origins to 1995, when the Computer Teacher Education undergraduate program was established within the Department of Science Education. Following the restructuring of Faculties of Education by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in 1998, the program was reorganized and formally founded. Since then, the department has evolved alongside rapid developments in information and communication technologies and their growing impact on education.
As learning environments have expanded beyond traditional classrooms into digital and online spaces, CEIT has focused on understanding how technology shapes learning and how meaningful learning environments can be designed, implemented, and evaluated.
The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs that integrate educational foundations, instructional design, and computing technologies. The curriculum combines pedagogical coursework with technical and design-oriented studies, including instructional material design, web and multimedia development, distance education, programming, database and network technologies, and teaching practicum experiences. Students gain competencies in analyzing learning needs, designing and implementing technology-supported learning environments, creating digital educational materials, and evaluating learning processes through research-based methods. Graduate programs further prepare instructional technology professionals and researchers specializing in computer-based instruction, multimedia learning, distance education, and emerging learning environments.
Research areas within the department include instructional technology, instructional design, multimedia and interactive systems, online education, digital literacy, teacher education, mobile learning, games and simulations, human–computer interaction, learning analytics, and educational data analysis.
CEIT graduates pursue careers in universities and public or private schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education as teachers, consultants, and educational program specialists. They work as instructional designers, educational technologists, digital content developers, software and usability specialists, consultants and researchers in universities, research centers, and technology companies. Their roles extend across education, public services, and industry, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field.
By integrating research, design, and practice, the department aims to contribute to the improvement of learning environments and to the effective and responsible use of technology in education at both national and international levels.
