Students who wish to do a voluntary internship are required to obtain an official letter of acceptance from the institution/organization where they will carry out their internship, confirming their acceptance. This document must be wet-signed by an authorized representative of the respective institution/organization.
The letter must clearly state the content, scope, start and end dates, and total duration of the internship.
Content refers to the concrete tasks or projects the intern will actually work on.
Scope expresses the general framework of the internship, the extent of the intern’s involvement in various processes, and the general competencies aimed to be gained.
Students must submit their internship requests by attaching the acceptance letter and sending it to the Department Internship Coordinator via email at erkane@metu.edu.tr. After the pre-approval stage, internship forms will be sent to you via email.
According to Article 13 of the Regulation on Applied Education in Higher Education, it is important that students who want to do a voluntary internship pay attention to the following points:
- A voluntary internship is not included in the curriculum of the student's registered program. (Article 3-e)
- It is carried out entirely based on the student’s own needs and willingness. (Article 3-e)
- It is generally determined by higher education institutions as not less than 20 working days. (Article 13-2) A longer internship period can be carried out voluntarily. (Article 13-5)
- The internship can also be done during the academic semester, summer school, or exam periods, provided it is at least three days a week. (Article 13-c)
- It is essential that the internship is carried out in the months corresponding to the semester or summer break. However, if the program or workplace conditions are not suitable, it can be done at other times as long as it does not interfere with education. (Article 13-1)
- The commission or sub-commissions evaluate the students doing internships as successful or unsuccessful based on the company evaluation form, the applied education file, and the predetermined learning outcomes. (Article 13-6)
- For students doing internships, occupational accident and disease insurance is provided through premiums paid by the higher education institutions. (Article 13-8)
- During applied education, responsibilities such as leave, attendance, discipline, and compliance with company rules are valid. (Article 11)
